Sigma launches 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN | C lens for mirrorless cameras

Compact and with a weight of only 290 grams, the new standard-range zoom lens is ideal for a wide range of photo and video applications including landscapes, portraits, street photography, architecture and events. Its optical design comprises 13 elements in 10 groups and includes three glass-moulded aspherical elements plus one element made from Special Low-Dispersion glass to ensure optimal image quality without excessive weight. Autofocusing is driven by a stepping motor, which is fast and quiet, making the lens ideal for use while recording video. Focusing is totally internal and the lens supports DMF and AF+MF modes. It is also compatible with in-camera lens aberration corrections.

To keep the lens as light as possible, the barrel is made from Thermally Stable Composite (TSC), which has a thermal conductivity close to that of aluminum to ensure stable performance and good operability when used in changing temperatures. By using metal for some of the internal structure, the parts could be much thinner and have a higher rigidity, ensuring the lens can stand up to frequent, heavy use. A high-precision, durable brass bayonet mount with a dust and splash-resistant design provides a secure connection to the camera.

The fast f/2.8 maximum aperture remains constant across the zoom range, enabling close-ups to be captured at wide apertures with attractive bokeh. Super Multi-Layer Coating has been applied to control ghosting and flare. The lens is also supplied with the petal-shaped LH582-02 lens hood. The new lens has yet to appear on Sigma’s Australian website but details can be found on the company’s web page here.
