Entries open for the Illuminate Filmmaking Challenge

Aspiring filmmakers who shoot video with DSLR or mirrorless cameras are invited to submit entries to the inaugural Illuminate Filmmaking Challenge 2021.

Organised by Robert Gatto, MD of Kayell Australia, the competitions is open to entrants at all levels and entry is free. Participants are asked to produce a short film on the theme ‘illuminate’, which must be between one and four minutes long with at least 70 percent of the footage shot on a DSLR, Mirrorless or higher quality camera. Up to 30 percent of the footage may be from smaller compact cameras, smartphones or drones, if desired. In addition to their feature film, entrants also need to provide a separate Behind the Scenes (BTS) video comprising up to five minutes of footage. All submissions must have been completed after 1 January 2021.

Submissions will close on 1 August 2021 and the 12 shortlisted entries will be announced on social media on 27 August. Final submissions of a screening copy of the film must be submitted by 1 September.

All participating films need to be produced as an MP4 file in no less than full HD resolution at widescreen 16:9 ratio with Stereo sound. No credits, names or production company details are permitted in the films to enable judges to base their decisions independently on talent, creativity and ability. The winning entry will receive a Nikon camera and lenses (to the value of $10,000) plus storage products from LaCie, Teradek, SmallHD & Wooden Camera equipment, Aputure LED lighting equipment and Deity microphones to a total value of AU$30,000.    Second and third place winners will receive equipment valued at $10,000 and $3000, respectively.

Social media viewers will also have the opportunity to be part of a prize pool valued at $7,000. Entrants must be over the age of 18 years and be an Australian permanent resident for at least one year prior to the Illuminate Filmmaking Challenge closing date on 1 August 2021.
